| Visitors to the island should
however take the opportunity to hire a boat from one
of the main villages and explore the smaller bays
and beaches on the island. For sandy beaches,
none are finer than those found on the island of
Antipaxos. There is a good range of water
sports on offer at the beaches in some of the larger
bays. Lakka in particular is an excellent location
for windsurfing, waterskiing and wake-boarding.
Walking
Being an island of great natural
beauty, Paxos is extremely popular with visitors
seeking to explore the island by foot. There are
many different bays, coves and inland areas to
discover on the island, as well as rich and diverse
wildlife, flora and fauna to observe.
There are several intriguing
landmarks to explore, including old Venetian
buildings, churches and even a deserted village.
Particularly enchanting is the view of the sunset
from the cliffs of the west coast of the island.
Visitors are however reminded that they should take
great care whilst walking near the cliff tops of the
island: all the cliff tops are unfenced and so
caution should be taken, particularly if out walking
with children.
Shopping
Shops on Paxos are generally open
from 08:30 until 13:30 and again from 18:00 until
21:30. Some shops however remain closed on
Wednesdays and Sundays, whilst others stay open all
day, every day during the busy summer months.
For grocery shopping, Gaios has a
number of mini-markets stocking a good range of
every day items, including fresh fruit and
vegetables. There are also a number of butchers in
Gaios supplying fresh meat and fish. There are five
bakeries dotted around the island which produce
fresh bread, cakes and ‘tiropita’ (traditional Greek
cheese pie).
In terms of souvenir shopping,
there are a good number of gift shops in the three
main villages of Gaios, Loggos and Lakka. Craft
ware and tapestry work are particularly good
quality. Jewellery is also of a high standard and
reasonably priced.
Entertainment
Paxiots are generally a friendly
and relaxed group of people – and so entertainment
on the island takes on a fun and light-hearted
spirit. As throughout Greece, the Paxiots practice
their own characteristic style of music and
dancing. At some tavernas, Greek dancing lessons
are held at the start of the evening so that guests
can participate in the dancing as the night wears
on!
There are numerous bars and
tavernas lining the streets of Gaios, and a few bars
in the smaller towns of Loggos and Lakka. Also
popular is Erimitis Sunset Bar on the west coast of
Paxos, where guests can enjoy a magnificent view of
the sunset into the Ionian Sea accompanied by soft
music and a wide selection of drinks and cocktails.
There are a few nightclubs on the island, which are
usually open at weekends during the off-peak season
and every night of the week during the busy summer
months. Castello Nightclub is located near the
petrol station in Gaios and the Phoenix Nightclub is
found near the new port of Gaios.
