A little way back from the
harbour road in the centre of Gaios is the bustling
flagstoned square: here there are a number of
popular outdoor cafés and bars where many islanders
will happily while away a summer’s evening. Just
across the square is the beautiful white Church of
St Agioi Apostoli.
Further back from the harbour, there are many
winding streets and alleyways where visitors can
find a treasure trove of small shops selling
jewellery, craft ware and tapestry. There is also a
limited selection of fashion boutiques, with a good
range of swim and leisure wear on offer. For
everyday items, there are numerous grocery stores
dotted around the back streets of Gaios.
Loggos
The village of Loggos is an
extremely picturesque and unspoilt harbour located
on the north-easterly side of the island. An array
of pastel-coloured tavernas and restaurants centre
around the small harbour, where visitors can sample
fresh local cuisine and Italian-influenced dishes. For the holiday-maker, there is a
good range of facilities in Loggos, including a
bureau de change, car and boat hire and an
ample-sized grocery store. There is also a bakery
located behind the waterfront church, which sells a
range of bread and cakes – the traditional flatbread
comes highly recommended.
There is a good beach a couple of minutes outside of
Loggos by foot.
Lakka
Lakka is situated on a circular
bay on the northern coast of the island of Paxos.
The still waters of Lakka bay provide ideal
conditions for swimming, windsurfing and other water
sports. A particularly pleasant way to spend a
summer’s day is to hire a boat from Lakka bay and
explore the nearby coves and bays. The village itself has a great
deal of character; it is peaceful and unspoilt by
the seasonal influx of tourists. Lakka has a good
choice of open-air restaurants serving high quality
Greek cuisine and there are many quaint, interesting
shops selling a variety of jewellery and craft ware.
There is a telephone office and bureau de change in
Lakka. A regular bus service connects Lakka to
Loggos and Gaios.
The picturesque island of
Antipaxos is renowned for its beautiful sandy
beaches and fine red wine. With only around 150
inhabitants, the small island retains every inch of
its dazzling natural beauty. Antipaxos is situated
approximately 2 kilometres to the south of Paxos and
can be reached by express boat service from Gaios
Harbour. Most visitors to Paxos find the time for a
day trip to Antipaxos – and this is definitely an
opportunity not to be missed!Visitors to the island can spend
the day relaxing on one of Antipaxos’s unspoilt
sandy beaches, taking an occasional dip in the
wonderfully clear waters. Open-air tavernas set
back from the beach provide good quality, reasonably
priced lunchtime meals.
For the more adventurous, an excursion into the
centre of Antipaxos is well worthwhile: the little
village of Vigla has an intriguing maze of narrow
walled paths, leading to orchards and vineyards
where visitors can sample figs, lemons and almonds.
