Local dishes come highly
recommended and include moussaka, souvlaki, stuffed
peppers and tomatoes, fresh fish and fresh Greek
salad – served of course with a generous helping of
delicious Paxiot olive oil! Italian cuisine is also
popular on the island, with many tavernas serving
good quality pasta dishes.
Greek beers are widely available
on the island and are very good, although
alternative international brands are also
available. Retsina, a traditional dry white table
wine with added pine resin, is widely served in
restaurants; be aware however that retsina has a
strong flavour, which many say is an acquired
taste! Red Antipaxos wine by contrast has a rich
and unique flavour and is reputedly the best in the
Ionian – and so is well worth sampling.
Also popular is the traditional
Greek aperitif, ouzo, which has a strong aniseed
flavour. Ouzo is often served straight, although,
for the faint hearted, ouzo can also be taken with
water or lemonade. Alternatively, try koum kouat
for a sweeter, fruity flavour: this orange-coloured
liqueur made locally from the koum kouat fruit
harvested on Corfu.
Greek coffee is strong, black and
is served in a small cup alongside a glass of
water. For instant coffee, be sure to ask for
‘Nescafé’ – which will generally be served in sachet
form along with a pot of hot water and a portion of UHT milk.
On Paxos it is advisable to buy bottled mineral
water for drinking purposes.
