Essential Information

Travelling to Paxos

Corfu International Airport serves the island of Paxos.  Chartered flights operate between Corfu and major European airports from the end of April through to October.  During winter months there is a scheduled airline service between Corfu and Athens, from where travellers can reach destinations throughout Europe.

From Corfu airport, travellers should take a taxi to either the old or new port.  Journey time to each is around 10 minutes.  From the new port, there are a number of hydrofoil services running to Paxos: the Santa II, the Santa III and the Paxos Flying Dolphin, each of which takes approximately one hour to reach Paxos.

There are also ferry services to Paxos for those travelling by car.  From the old port, a small boat service runs to Paxos.  Sea taxi services are also available for those arriving in the early hours of the morning, when the hydrofoil and ferry services tend not to operate.

Once you arrive on Paxos, car hire can be arranged in the main villages of Gaios, Loggos and Lakka.  Boat, moped and bicycle hire are also available.  There is just one petrol station on the island, situated just outside Gaios.  Taxi services are limited on Paxos, but are efficient and reasonably priced.

Currency and Banks

The local currency in Paxos is, as in mainland Greece, the Euro.  There are a number of banks in the main town of Gaios where Travellers’ Cheques can be cashed and foreign notes can be exchanged.  The banks are generally open weekdays from 8am until 2pm; however during the summer months some banks also open during the afternoon and on weekends for the convenience of tourists.

There are also a number of bureaux de change offices in Gaios, Loggos and Lakka where travellers may change foreign currency for Euros.  There is a post office on the waterfront in Gaios which is open Monday to Friday.

Language and Culture

The local language on Paxos is Greek.  Many Paxiots however practice excellent spoken English, and Italian is also widely spoken.

The way of life on Paxos is very laid back.  In the hot summer months, many islanders take an afternoon rest in order to escape the sun – so when visiting the island be aware that shops and other facilities may be closed during the mid-afternoon hours.

There is a long tradition of self-sufficiency on Paxos and islanders tend to turn their hand to a number of different trades.  For example, in the summer many Paxiots are involved in running restaurants and tavernas to cater for the influx of tourists during the peak season.  In the autumn by contrast, most of the islanders help out in the olive harvest.
